OpenAI lost $540M in 2022, will need $100B more to develop AGI
In 2022, OpenAI faced a loss of $540 million while earning only $28 million in revenue, primarily due to ChatGPT development costs.
Despite anticipating over $200 million in revenue this year, OpenAI's expenses are expected to soar, partly because companies are now charging high fees for data access. Reddit, StackOverflow, and others are implementing new policies, and Elon Musk even cut off Twitter's data feed to OpenAI after discovering they only paid $2 million annually.
OpenAI's Altman estimates that a $100 billion investment will be needed to develop AGI, which could then guide AI modeling improvements and potentially reduce capital requirements.
The high cost of AI development might give larger companies an edge in this competitive field. For example, Microsoft, which recently invested $10 billion in OpenAI, has a deal to receive 75% of OpenAI's profits until their investment is repaid and 49% of profits thereafter.
The substantial capital needed to create foundational AI products could hinder other companies' progress. An instance of this is Inflection AI, founded by a DeepMind executive, which launched its chatbot, Pi, after raising $225 million in seed funding. Despite these efforts, Pi has received lukewarm reviews and has been overshadowed by ChatGPT's success.
